At least 332 people were arrested for illegally crossing the country's borders in June and smuggled goods worth more than Tk307.65 crore were seized during Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB)'s anti-smuggling operations across border areas and other parts of the country.
According to a press release issued today (7 July), the detainees included 47 Bangladeshi nationals, one Indian national and 284 Myanmar nationals. Legal action has been taken against all of them.
The BGB also arrested 212 suspected smugglers during the month on charges of drug trafficking and other smuggling-related offences, reads the press release.
The border force said its operations led to the seizure of contraband goods valued at Tk307.65 crore.
Among the confiscated items were 5.592kg of gold, 18,015 sarees, 3,252 pieces of three-piece sets, shirt pieces, shawls and blankets, 9,551 ready-made garments, 189,018 cosmetic products, 17.54 lakhs fireworks, 7,464 cubic feet of timber, 7,316kg of tea leaves, 4,270kg of betel nut, 101,776kg of coal, 174,898 packets of bidis and cigarettes, 497 mobile phones, 1,865 mobile displays, 41,162 mobile phone components, 15,056 electrical items, 22,612 pairs of spectacles, 52,736kg of cumin, 4,285kg of garlic, 18,798kg of sugar, 10,224kg of fertiliser, 1.14 million shrimp fry, 3,282 litres of edible oil, diesel, octane, petrol and lubricants, 2,276 packets of pesticides, 591,419 units of various medicines, 694kg of seeds, 1,239 vehicle parts, 11 trucks and covered vans, five pickup trucks, three private cars and buses, three tractors, 20 trolleys and microbuses, 68 CNG-run auto-rickshaws, easy bikes and auto-rickshaws, 35 motorcycles, and 53 bicycles and vans.
In separate operations, BGB recovered eight locally made and foreign-made pistols, one rifle, 16 magazines, 630 rounds of ammunition, two mines, six grenades and six other weapons.
The force also seized a large quantity of narcotics, including 3.78 million yaba tablets, 18.15kg of crystal meth (ice), 607g of heroin, 1,422 bottles of phensedyl, 6,838 bottles of foreign liquor, 395 litres of locally made liquor, 3,268 cans of beer, 1,710.47kg of cannabis, 184,633 narcotic tablets and injections, 24,201 bottles of various syrups and 82,715 units of different narcotic medicines and tablets.
