Public Prosecutor MM Mahabub Morshed Lalon said plaster from the ceiling of the veranda in front of the Kachua court, located on the ground floor where judicial magistrates conduct proceedings, suddenly fell off around noon.
He said plaster fell on the heads of justice seekers standing on the veranda, leaving them injured.
The injured were rescued and admitted to the 250-bed Bagerhat District Hospital, he added.
The injured are Suman Das, 45, Hridoy Hawlader, 26, Habiullah Sheikh, 28, Md Firoz Sheikh, 65, and Motaleb Hossain, 48. They are from different areas of Bagerhat.
Later in the afternoon, judges of the Bagerhat District and Sessions Judge Court visited the injured justice seekers at the hospital and inquired about their treatment.
Mahabub said the three-storey Bagerhat District and Sessions Judge Court building is quite old and cracks have appeared in many parts of it.
The Public Works Department has been requested to quickly repair the places where plaster has fallen off and cracks have developed, the official said.
Dr Sheikh Adnan Hossain, medical officer at the 250-bed Bagerhat District Hospital, said the five people injured in the incident have sustained injuries to varying degrees, but none of the injuries was serious.
