A Dhaka court yesterday (5 July) placed six young men on a three-day remand after police arrested them on suspicion of involvement in the activities of an "extremist organisation."
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ariful Islam passed the order following a hearing.
The six are Shah Amanat Sabir, Hossain Tanim, Junaid, Ataullah Shah, Abidur Rahman and Bayezid. No lawyer represented the accused during the remand hearing.
Police detained them in the Mini Cox's Bazar area of Jatrabari around 6:30am yesterday.
Later, Jatrabari Police Station Inspector AB Siddique produced them in court and sought a seven-day remand after showing them arrested under Section 54 of the Code of Criminal Procedure.
According to the remand petition, police received intelligence around 6am that several people had gathered at a field beside Amin Mohammad Group in the Mini Cox's Bazar area of Jatrabari for training related to the activities of an "extremist organisation."
Acting on the information, police reached the spot around 6:30am. The accused tried to flee upon seeing the police but were nabbed.
The petition further said the accused failed to provide a satisfactory explanation for gathering at the spot during questioning.
Police suspect, based on intelligence and a preliminary investigation, that they may be involved in the activities of an "extremist organisation."
