Bangladesh and Italy today (8 July) discussed further strengthening bilateral ties, with particular emphasis on expanding defence cooperation and modernising military training.
The discussion took place when Italian Ambassador to Bangladesh Antonio Alessandro paid a courtesy call on the Prime Minister's Defence Adviser Brig Gen (Retd) AKM Shamsul Islam at the latter's office at Dhaka Cantonment, according to an ISPR press release.
During the meeting, both sides also discussed Italy's support for the modernisation of the Bangladesh Armed Forces. The two also recalled the long-standing friendly relations between Bangladesh and Italy.
The discussions focused on enhancing the professional skills and operational capabilities of members of the Bangladesh Armed Forces through greater participation in military training programmes at Italian defence institutions and increased opportunities for the exchange of expertise.
They also exchanged views on the significant contributions of both countries to United Nations peacekeeping missions and expressed their commitment to working together to promote global peace and international security in the future.
Welcoming the Italian envoy, the defence adviser of the PM said Bangladesh highly values its military and diplomatic relations with Italy.
Ambassador Antonio Alessandro, in turn, praised the professionalism of the Bangladesh Armed Forces and expressed confidence that defence ties between the two countries would continue to deepen in the years ahead.
