The Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) said it sent back 10 people to India last night (2 July) after they were allegedly pushed into Bangladesh earlier in the day by India's Border Security Force (BSF) through the Kachurgul border in Moulvibazar's Juri upazila.
According to locals, the group -- including women and children -- reportedly entered Bangladesh through the Kachurgul border under the Lathitila Border Outpost (BOP) in Goalbari Union yesterday morning.
Lieutenant Colonel Md Ataur Rahman, commanding officer of BGB's 52 Battalion, said locals informed BGB after spotting the group near the border.
"With the assistance of locals, BGB took the 10 people into custody. Later that night, they were pushed back to India through another border point," he added.
He further said BGB remains on high alert over incidents of cross-border push-ins and claimed the force had intelligence suggesting that some locals were assisting the BSF in such operations.
"We will take strict action against those involved," he said.
According to locals, BGB members initially took the group into custody and kept them at a nearby house.
Several videos surfaced on social media reportedly showing the 10 people, including women, crying and pleading to be released.
In one such video, members of the group claimed they had travelled to different parts of India's Gujarat in 2025 and 2026 in search of work. They alleged that Indian authorities later detained them and brought them to the Bangladesh border before forcing them across.
The 10 were identified as Riyadul Molla, 55; Sabbir Sheikh, 19; Farida Begum, 40; Labiba Khatun, 8; Suba, 32; Dilruba, 38; Rita Begum, 40; Riya Begum, 25; Laili Khatun, 28; and Salma Khatun, 27.
However, The Business Standard could not independently verify the authenticity of the videos.
Meanwhile, local journalists alleged that BGB officials declined to provide information when they visited the Lathitila BOP after learning about the incident.
Khorshed Alam, Juri correspondent of Dainik Protidiner Bangladesh, alleged that BGB personnel harassed him when he went there to gather information.
He also claimed that his younger brother, Towhid Alam, and his friend Sabbir Rahman were taken to the BGB camp before being released today.
"I was denied information about the incident and harassed when I visited the BGB camp. My brother and his friend were also taken to the camp before being released later," Khorshed said.
