Highlights:

A court has ordered the seizure of assets worth nearly Tk33 crore belonging to Md Khairul Bashar Bahar, owner of BSB Global Network, who was arrested over allegations of defrauding students through fake overseas higher education offers.

The development was confirmed on Sunday by Jasim Uddin Khan, special superintendent of police (Media) at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).

According to the CID, Khairul Bashar and his associates lured students with advertisements promising higher education opportunities in countries including the United States and Canada, allegedly collecting crores of taka through fraudulent means.

Based on preliminary evidence that he had amassed substantial assets with illicit proceeds, the CID filed a case against him under the Money Laundering Prevention Act with Gulshan Police Station on 4 May last year. He was arrested by the CID's Financial Crime Unit from Dhanmondi on 14 July and later produced before a court.

The investigation found that Khairul Bashar allegedly used the proceeds of the fraud to purchase a flat in Bhatara in the name of his first wife, another flat in the Sheltech Bithika project in the name of his second wife, Kaniz Fatema alias Dona, two flats in Rajabazar in his own name, and two multi-storey buildings on Aziz Road in Dhaka.

The CID also identified 3,482.5 decimals of land registered in his name and in the name of his company. The combined deed value of the properties is estimated at around Tk33 crore.

Acting on an application by the CID's Financial Crime Unit, the Senior Special Judge's Court ordered the seizure of the immovable assets.

The CID alleged that, while portraying himself as an educationist and businessman, Khairul Bashar ran an organised fraud ring through BSB Global Network, swindling students out of crores of taka and amassing vast wealth. The investigation is ongoing, and the agency said it is tracing additional movable and immovable assets linked to him across the country.
