Former senior secretary NM Ziaul Alam has been shown arrested in the murder case filed over the killing of Mahbub Hasan Mamun during the July Uprising in the Kafrul area.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Didarul Alam's court passed the order today (15 July) following a police application.

Earlier on 9 July, the case's investigation officer, Kafrul Police Station Sub-Inspector Md Abdul Alim, showed Ziaul Alam arrested in the case.

The court later fixed today for a hearing in the presence of the accused; state counsel Muhammad Shamsuddoha Sumon confirmed the matter.

Police said preliminary investigations had found evidence and witness statements indicating the accused's involvement in the incident.

According to the police, showing him arrested in the case was necessary for the sake of a fair investigation.

According to the case statement, Mahbub Hasan, 34, joined a protest in front of the BRTA office in Mirpur on 19 July 2024. He was shot at around 4:30pm and was declared dead by doctors after being taken to hospital.

Following the incident, his wife filed a murder case at Kafrul Police Station. Former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and 161 others have been named as accused in the case.
