The government has undertaken sweeping reforms to bring primary education up to global standards, including a new curriculum, an integrated teacher policy, technology-based classrooms and improved school infrastructure, State Minister for Primary and Mass Education Bobby Hajjaj said today (6 July).
He made the remarks while speaking to journalists at Agargaon Taltola Government Primary School after visiting several government primary schools in the Dhaka North City Corporation area.
The state minister said the government is implementing a long-term action plan to encourage students to attend school, address learning gaps and ensure quality primary education.
As part of the initiative, integrated measures have been taken to provide free uniforms, introduce technology-based education, restructure the curriculum, formulate a teacher development policy and improve school infrastructure, he said.
Bobby said officials have been visiting government primary schools across the country over the past four months to assess the actual state of educational activities.
Infrastructure gaps at government primary schools in the capital are also being assessed under the ongoing "Drishtinandan" project aimed at modernising the institutions, he added.
The state minister said students' learning progress had been assessed through direct interactions with them. While most students were performing well, teachers had been instructed to provide special support to those falling behind in specific subjects.
He said work is underway to restructure the existing curriculum to make it simpler, more effective and student-centred.
"At the same time, an integrated teacher policy is being formulated covering recruitment, training, continuous professional development (CPD), key performance indicator (KPI)-based evaluation, monitoring and training structures at the upazila and district levels," he added.
Bobby also outlined plans to introduce video lessons, smart classrooms, flat panels, instant assessment systems and mechanisms to identify students' learning gaps and provide remedial teaching as part of a technology-based education system.
He said "The government's goal is not limited to improving infrastructure but to bring fundamental changes to the quality of education."
"To achieve this, efforts are being made to integrate students, teachers, administration, technology and the curriculum," he added.
Dhaka region Deputy Director of Primary Education Md Abdul Aziz, the Dhaka district primary education officer, primary education officials from different police station areas, students and guardians were present.
