Education Minister ANM Ehsanul Hoque Milon has said the government will soon begin promoting teachers to the post of head teacher in government primary schools, paving the way for filling long-standing vacancies.

Responding to a written question from lawmaker Khairul Kabir Khokon during the 24th sitting of the budget session of 13th Jatiya Sangsad, he said the vacancies would be filled once the promotions are completed.

The session, which began at 3pm, was chaired by Deputy Speaker Barrister Kayser Kamal.

In his question, Khokon said more than 34,000 government primary schools have vacant head teacher posts and asked when they would be filled and whether the provision to fill 80% of the posts through promotion is being implemented.

The education minister said the High Court recently disposed of a writ petition over head teacher promotions, clearing the way for the process to begin.

He added that the new recruitment rules have increased the promotion quota for head teacher posts from 65% to 80%.

However, implementation was delayed by legal complications. With the case now resolved, 80% of head teacher posts will be filled through promotion under the new policy, he said.

SSC exams in January, HSC in June from 2027

The government plans to hold Secondary School Certificate (SSC) and equivalent examinations in January and Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) and equivalent examinations in June from the 2027 academic year.

The education minister disclosed the plan in response to a starred question from ruling party lawmaker Lutfor Rahman of Cox's Bazar-3 during today's parliamentary question-and-answer session.

He said the government is reorganising the public examination calendar to better align the academic year with international standards.

Under the plan, SSC and equivalent examinations will be held in January and HSC and equivalent examinations in June from the 2027 academic year.

The minister said the move would gradually bring the academic calendar and public examination schedule into alignment while reducing the loss of instructional time.

He added that the government is working to bring forward public examinations in phases.
