Israeli assault on Hebron displaces thousands as West Bank restrictions tighten
The Yemeni Women’s Empowerment Foundation (YWEF) is urging the international community and UN agencies to intervene in order to stop medical infrastructure in Taiz from collapsing.
The organisation said “Taiz is facing an escalating health and humanitarian catastrophe amid the siege imposed” by Houthi forces. The siege, alongside attacks, “have contributed to the closure of nearly 52% of hospitals and medical centers from service”, it said.
“Do not let the victims of shelling and sniping face death twice: once under the fire of the Houthi militia, and once due to the absence of treatment, the spread of epidemics, and the collapse of hospitals,” it added.
The Israeli military has dismissed international concern over settler attacks on Palestinian olive harvesters in the occupied West Bank, saying the “incidents” drawing media attention “account for only a small percentage” of the territory’s olive-growing areas.
The statement on X came after Palestinian authorities said Israelis have carried out 482 attacks “targeting the olive harvest across nine West Bank governorates since the start of the season” on October 3.
They include the attacks by Israeli settlers on Washington Post photojournalist, Heidi Levine, and a group of European diplomats earlier this month.
Yemen’s internationally recognised government has welcomed Pope Leo’s call for an end to hostilities in the country, including in the city of Taiz, which is under siege by the Houthi rebels.
In a post on X, the Yemeni Ministry of Foreign and Expatriate Affairs urged the international community to build on the pope’s appeal by “taking practical measures to pressure the militia to end the siege and halt its violations”.
The statement came after Pope Leo made a “heartfelt appeal for the hostilities to stop, so that the people in Yemen and across the entire region can live in peace”. He said that he was particularly concerned about the humanitarian situation in southwestern Taiz, “where the population suffers due to the lack of food, water and medical assistance”.
