Israel is allegedly withholding the remains of 799 Palestinians, including women and children, according to a statement issued by Palestinian prisoner organisations and a campaign seeking the recovery of bodies of those killed and information on missing people.
The statement, reported by Al Jazeera, said the organisations had identified 799 Palestinians whose remains are still being held by Israel.
The groups said the practice "deprives Palestinian families of knowing the fate of their loved ones, bidding them farewell and burying them".
The Palestinian National Campaign for the Retrieval of Martyrs' Bodies and Disclosure of the Fate of the Missing is a civil society group that campaigns for the release of Palestinian remains held by Israel and investigates cases involving missing people.
At least 100 Palestinians killed in Gaza in past two weeks
Meanwhile, acting UN special coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process Ramiz Alakbarov told the UN Security Council that Israeli air strikes in Gaza since 12 August had killed at least 100 Palestinians and injured more than 400 others.
"Conditions in Gaza remain dire despite a nearly year-old ceasefire", Alakbarov told the UNSC during a session on rising tensions in Gaza and the occupied West Bank.
