For nearly two decades, they conquered Europe together.

They lifted Champions League trophies, dominated world football in Real Madrid's famous white shirt, and built legacies that will endure long after they retire.

Now, Cristiano Ronaldo and Luka Modric meet not as teammates but as rivals, with the 2026 Fifa World Cup offering one final stage for two of football's greatest icons.

When Portugal face Croatia in Friday's Round of 32 clash, history will be made. For the first time, two outfield players aged over 40 will start against each other in a World Cup match. More importantly, for one of them, football's greatest tournament is almost certainly about to end.

Ronaldo still chasing history

At 41, Ronaldo continues to redefine what is possible.

The Portugal captain became the first player in history to score in six different Fifa World Cups after netting twice against Uzbekistan during the group stage.

Those goals took his World Cup tally to 18, placing him among the tournament's greatest goalscorers.

His overall international record is even more extraordinary. Ronaldo has scored more than 150 goals in over 220 appearances for Portugal, making him both the highest-scoring men's international footballer and the most-capped player in history.

At the club level, his achievements are unmatched. Across spells with Sporting CP, Manchester United, Real Madrid, Juventus, and Al Nassr, Ronaldo has scored more than 950 senior career goals, won five Ballon d'Or awards, five UEFA Champions League titles, league championships in England, Spain and Italy, and guided Portugal to the UEFA Euro 2016 title, and the 2019 UEFA Nations League crown.

Yet despite those remarkable numbers, questions remain over his role in Roberto Martínez's side.

Portugal finished second in their group after beating Uzbekistan but failing to overcome DR Congo and Colombia, raising concerns that the team has become too dependent on its veteran captain.

Still, Martinez has shown no intention of leaving Ronaldo on the bench.

Modric's timeless brilliance

If Ronaldo has built his legacy through goals, Modric has done so through elegance and intelligence.

The 40-year-old Croatian remains one of football's greatest midfielders, even as he enters what is likely to be his final World Cup.

The former Real Madrid playmaker won the 2018 Ballon d'Or, becoming the first player in a decade to break the dominance of Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.

His club career includes six UEFA Champions League titles, multiple La Liga crowns, and more than 600 appearances for Real Madrid before joining AC Milan.

Internationally, Modric has become Croatia's greatest-ever footballer.

He has earned more than 200 international caps, becoming only the fourth player in football history to reach that milestone while inspiring Croatia to the 2018 World Cup final and the 2022 semi-finals.

At this tournament, he has already registered an assist and remains the heartbeat of Zlatko Dalic's midfield despite his advancing years.

One last battle

The two legends know each other better than most opponents.

Between 2012 and 2018, Ronaldo and Modric shared one of football's greatest dressing rooms at Real Madrid, winning four Champions League trophies together while helping establish one of the most successful club dynasties in modern football.

Now they stand on opposite sides.

Portugal possesses one of the tournament's most talented squads, featuring Bruno Fernandes, Bernardo Silva, Rafael Leao, Joao Neves, and Vitinha alongside Ronaldo.

Croatia, meanwhile, continues to rely on Modric's vision and experience, supported by a disciplined side that has built a reputation for thriving in knockout football.

The winners will advance to the Round of 16, where a likely meeting with Spain awaits.

More than a football match

Friday's contest is about far more than qualification.

It is a meeting between two players who have defined an era, collected virtually every major trophy, and inspired millions across the world.

One legend will continue chasing the only major prize still missing from his collection.

The other will almost certainly bid farewell to the World Cup stage.

For Cristiano Ronaldo and Luka Modric, history is guaranteed.

Only one more chapter, however, will still be left to write.
