A lighter vessel sank in the Karnaphuli channel within the Chattogram Port area early this morning (30 June) after colliding with another lighter vessel, although all 12 people on board were rescued.

The accident occurred at around 5:30am between buoys 2 and 3 in the port channel, according to officials.

The vessel, MV Bay Harbour-2, sank following the collision and its crew members fell into the water.

Members of the Bangladesh Coast Guard launched a rescue operation after receiving the information and rescued eight crew members from the channel.

The remaining four drifted towards Parki Beach, where local residents brought them to safety.

According to the Coast Guard, the vessel was carrying stone from Chattogram to Dhaka when the accident occurred.

Chattogram Port Authority Acting Secretary Mohammad Nasir Uddin said the sunken vessel belongs to Bay Harbour Limited.

He added that the incident would not disrupt vessel movement in the Chattogram Port channel.

The cause of the collision was not immediately known.
