A man was beaten to death in Chattogram's Patiya upazila following an altercation over the alleged theft of bananas. Police arrested one suspect in connection with the incident.
The incident took place around midnight today (1 August) in the Monaf Hajipara area of Ward No. 6 under Habilasdwip union.
The deceased was identified as Mohammad Toha, also known as Toha Munsi, 45, general secretary of the local Munsi Association and son of the late Abul Bashar.
According to police and local residents, Toha questioned a youth, Md Anwar, after seeing him loitering in front of his house late at night over the alleged theft of bananas from his tree.
An altercation ensued, during which Anwar and his associates allegedly attacked Toha with sticks, leaving him seriously injured.
Local people rescued him and took him to Patiya General Hospital, where the duty doctor declared him dead.
Patiya Police Station Sub-Inspector Mohammad Mahbub told The Business Standard that the prime suspect, Md Anwar, was arrested in a drive conducted after the incident.
Police are continuing drives to identify and arrest the others involved.
He said the body had been sent to the Chittagong Medical College Hospital morgue for an autopsy, while the process of filing a murder case was underway.
