Mexico and Ecuador meet at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City on Tuesday (30 June) in a high-stakes FIFA World Cup Round of 32 clash, with both sides aiming to book a place in the last 16.

Kick-off is scheduled for 7am BST on Wednesday (1 July).

El Tri enter the knockout tie as slight favourites after emerging as one of only three teams to win all three group-stage matches.

Javier Aguirre's side also boasts the tournament's best defensive record, having progressed without conceding a single goal.

Ecuador, meanwhile, arrive with momentum after a dramatic win over Germany sealed qualification as one of the competition's best third-placed teams.

Sebastián Beccacece's side has combined defensive discipline with physical intensity throughout the tournament and will believe it can upset the hosts.

Aguirre is expected to stick with his disciplined 4-3-3 system, built on defensive organisation and quick transitions.

Erik Lira, Luis Romo and teenage midfielder Gilberto Mora are likely to anchor the midfield, while Roberto Alvarado, Raúl Jiménez and Julián Quiñones lead the attack.

Mexico's greatest strength has been its defensive solidity. It is the only team to complete the group stage with a perfect record while keeping three clean sheets. Clinical finishing and the backing of a home crowd at the Estadio Azteca further strengthen El Tri's credentials.

The hosts' main concern is their creativity against possession-heavy opponents, with chances sometimes proving difficult to create against compact defences.

Beccacece is expected to retain the attack-minded 4-2-3-1 formation that delivered victory over Germany.

Moisés Caicedo and Pedro Vite will dictate play from midfield, while Gonzalo Plata, Nilson Angulo and Jhon Yeboah are set to support captain Enner Valencia in attack.

Ecuador's greatest asset is a well-balanced side that combines physicality with technical quality. Defensively, William Pacho, Joel Ordóñez and Piero Hincapié have formed one of the tournament's most organised backlines.

However, converting chances consistently has remained a concern and could prove decisive in what is expected to be a closely contested knockout encounter.

Mexico are expected to restore several first-choice players after rotating the squad against Czechia in their final group-stage match.

Raúl Jiménez, Erik Lira and Johan Vásquez are all set to return to the starting XI, while Raúl Rangel is expected to start in goal after veteran Guillermo Ochoa made what is expected to be his farewell World Cup appearance.

Ecuador have no major injury concerns and are likely to field the same side that defeated Germany, with Beccacece expected to resist making significant changes.

Probable XI
