Police have recovered the headless body of a young man, 12 days after his alleged abduction from a refugee camp in Ukhiya, Cox's Bazar, with law enforcement detaining three in this connection.
Md Riaz Uddin Ahmed, superintendent of police, said the breakthrough came last night (4 July) after locals reported a foul smell coming from a septic tank in the camp's H-Block.
A team from the 8th Armed Police Battalion (APBn) then visited the scene and recovered a partially decomposed, headless body from inside the tank.
The victim, Abdul Hafez, a small shopkeeper from Jamtoli Camp No 15, went missing on the night of 22 June while returning home from a local shop.
Abdul Hafez's father, Md Nuruzzuhar, said the family searched for him after he did not return home and later filed a complaint with camp authorities on 24 June.
Residents also detained three individuals suspected of involvement in the killing and turned them over to police for questioning.
Their identities were not immediately disclosed. Police said preliminary findings indicate the killing may have been linked to a power struggle between rival criminal groups operating inside the Rohingya camp.
The body was sent to the Cox's Bazar District Sadar Hospital morgue for an autopsy as the investigation continues.
