Parliament Opposition Deputy Leader Syed Abdullah Mohammad Taher has been appointed chairman of the parliamentary Public Accounts Committee (PAC), one of the legislature's key oversight bodies.
The committee was formed during the second session of the 13th National Parliament today (8 July) after Chief Whip Mohammad Nurul Islam, on behalf of the Leader of the House, placed the proposal before parliament.
The proposal was adopted unanimously by voice vote.
Taher, a lawmaker from Cumilla-11 representing Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, will lead the 15-member committee responsible for scrutinising government accounts, public expenditure and financial accountability in accordance with the Rules of Procedure of Parliament.
The committee members are Mohammad Aman Ullah Aman (Dhaka-2), ABM Ashrafuddin Nizan (Lakshmipur-4), AKM Fazlul Haque Milon (Gazipur-5), Mohammad Hafiz Ibrahim (Bhola-2), AM Mahbubuddin (Noakhali-1), Mohammad Jalal Uddin (Chandpur-2), Dr Mohammad Mahbubur Rahman (Mymensingh-7), SK Azizul Bari Helal (Khulna-4), Md Manzurul Islam (Dinajpur-1), Mohammad Fazle Huda (Naogaon-3), Mohammad Zakir Hossain (Mymensingh-5), Syed Zainul Abedin (Dhaka-4), Mohammad Ruhul Amin (Chuadanga-2) and Mohammad Anarul Islam (Kurigram-1).
Speaking while placing the proposal, the chief whip said the committee had been constituted in accordance with the Constitution and the Rules of Procedure of Parliament.
The committee officially began its work following the approval of the proposal by the House under the chairmanship of the Speaker.
With the formation of the PAC, parliament has now constituted 11 standing committees during the ongoing second session of the 13th National Parliament.
