The Prince of Wales and Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer have led national tributes to the England football squad following their agonizing 2-1 World Cup semi-final defeat to Argentina.
Prince William has urged England to hold their heads high after the team's defeat against Argentina, BBC reports.
In a message shared by Kensington Palace, the Prince of Wales said he was "gutted" by the result and praised the squad's performance throughout the tournament.
"The fight and belief you have shown has inspired us all. The most complete England team in a tournament. Hold your heads high."
The message was signed "W", indicating it came directly from Prince William, patron of the Football Association.
UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer also expressed disappointment over the defeat, saying he was "gutted" but praised the team's commitment, adding that the players had made the nation proud with their passion and determination.
Argentina reached the World Cup final against Spain with a 2-1 victory over England in Atlanta after scoring twice late in the match, despite Anthony Gordon giving England the lead in the 55th minute.
Prince William, a keen football fan and Aston Villa supporter, has frequently been seen cheering on the club.
The Royal Family also paid tribute to the team in a social media post, saying: "While you Three Lions may be licking your wounds today, you remain the pride of a nation – and will rise again."
In his final address to the House of Commons before the semi-final, Sir Keir Starmer referred to England's World Cup campaign. After the match, he said: "Tonight wasn't the result we all hoped for, but this England team has given it their all."
