Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has arrested a man accused of stabbing his wife to death in front of their two children after she refused to give him money for drugs in Gazipur's Sreepur upazila.

RAB-1 Commanding Officer Lt Col Md Neyamul Halim Chowdhury disclosed the information at a press briefing at the RAB Media Centre in Karwan Bazar today (14 July).

He said the incident took place at around 2:30am yesterday in Sreepur. The victim, Nasima Akter, 27, worked at a local garment factory and lived with her husband, Sayedul Islam, 40, and their two children in a rented house in the area.

Nasima was the daughter of Abdul Mannan of Bonpara village under Purbadhala Police Station in Netrokona, while Sayedul is from Girdapara village under Tarakanda Police Station in Mymensingh.

According to RAB, quoting the victim's relatives, Sayedul was addicted to drugs and frequently demanded money from his wife to buy them. The couple often quarrelled over the issue.

On Sunday, after receiving her salary from the garment factory, Nasima returned home. Later that night, Sayedul allegedly demanded Tk3,000 from her. When she refused, an argument broke out.

During the altercation, Sayedul allegedly stabbed Nasima repeatedly, killing her in front of their eight-year-old daughter, Samia, and five-year-old son, Jisan.

Lt Col Neyamul Halim said RAB launched an operation immediately after the incident and arrested the accused within 24 hours.

He has been handed over to Sreepur Police Station for further legal action.

Responding to a question, the RAB official said Sayedul had no previous criminal record but was a regular drug user who allegedly financed his addiction with money taken from his wife.
