A court in Cumilla yesterday (5 July) sentenced a 24-year-old man to rigorous life imprisonment for repeatedly raping an eighth-grade student over nearly two months in 2020.

Judge Md Abdul Hannan of the Cumilla Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal also fined the convict Kazi Mozammel Haque Rifat Tk20,000. In default of payment, he will have to serve an additional two months in prison.

The convict is Rifat, son of KM Swapan and a resident of the Mogoltuli area in Cumilla city.

Court Police Inspector Md Sadekur Rahman said the prosecution proved the charges beyond a reasonable doubt, leading the tribunal to sentence Rifat to rigorous life imprisonment.

According to the case statement and court sources, Rifat, who was the neighbour of the victim, raped the girl on the afternoon of 10 August 2020, after finding her alone at home. He threatened her before committing the crime.

The case statement also alleges that he raped the girl several more times between 10 August and 27 September that year.

On 1 October 2020, the victim's mother filed a case with Kotwali Model Police Station under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act.

After completing the investigation, the police submitted a charge sheet against Rifat to the court on 28 March 2021.

Following the verdict, the judge ordered authorities to send the convict to Cumilla Central Jail.
