The Sayedabad Bus Terminal in the capital will be converted into a city bus terminal, while inter-district bus services will be relocated to Kanchpur, Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Administrator Md Abdus Salam said today (9 July).
Speaking to reporters after inspecting the Sayedabad Bus Terminal, he also said the authorities are planning to relocate the Gulistan bus terminal to the other side of the river.
He said, "Sayedabad, despite being built as a modern bus terminal, had long functioned as a garage and bus dumping station instead of serving passengers. A clean-up drive is underway and will be intensified. Transport operators will be allowed to keep only one or two buses waiting inside the terminal."
"Transport owners and workers have been given until 15 July to comply with the new rules. The transport operators have assured their cooperation," he added.
The DSCC administrator said illegal shops inside the terminal will be removed, while vendors and hawkers may be allocated designated spaces after verification of their documents.
"No fines have been imposed during the drive so far, but mobile courts will be launched if the terminal is not cleared by the deadline", he added.
