Some quarters are misleading Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and pushing the ruling party towards fascism, Jamaat Secretary General Mia Golam Porwar alleged today (1 August).
Speaking at a protest rally organised by Jamaat's Dhaka Metropolitan North unit at Mohakhali in the capital, he said reforming the Constitution's basic structure was the only way to prevent the return of fascism.
The rally was organised demanding implementation of the referendum verdict and speedy trial of those involved in the mass killings during the 2024 July Uprising.
"The people of the country have not forgotten the painful memories of the July Uprising. But the BNP, which benefited from the uprising, has moved away from its spirit. It is now unwilling to accept a referendum to implement the July Charter," he said.
Criticising the BNP, Porwar alleged that attempts were being made to bring back fascism through legal amendments under the banner of a "reformed Awami League."
He also accused the government of moving away from the spirit of the July Uprising by appointing party loyalists at different levels of the administration.
"Constitutional reform of the basic structure is the only way to prevent the return of fascism," he said.
Meanwhile, at a separate rally organised by Jamaat's Dhaka Metropolitan South unit at the north gate of Baitul Mukarram National Mosque, the party's Naib-e-Ameer Professor Mujibur Rahman warned that the government would meet the same fate as previous authoritarian regimes if it ignored people's demands.
"Democracy's main foundation is respecting the views of the majority. But the government's actions do not fully reflect people's hopes and expectations. Particularly on fundamental issues like elections and referendums, there is a tendency to ignore the people's verdict.
"As long as any political party or group fails to respect people's votes and verdicts, it cannot be considered a truly democratic party. Jamaat will remain uncompromising in the movement to establish people's rights," he added.
He urged the government to accept people's legitimate demands and honour the sacrifices of those killed during the July Uprising, warning that a stronger movement would be launched otherwise.
