Teachers should be required to resign from their jobs before contesting any election, and a law should be enacted to that effect, Education and Primary and Mass Education Minister Dr ANM Ehsanul Haque Milon said today (2 July).

Speaking as the chief guest at the formal announcement ceremony of the Global Partnership for Education (GPE) System Transformation Grant (STG) and Multiplier Grant in the capital, the minister said teachers should not be allowed to contest local government or any other election while remaining in service.

The minister said the government is investing significantly in teacher training and professional development, stressing that the funds must be used effectively.

He also urged teachers to carry out their responsibilities with sincerity to help build the Bangladesh of the future.

Milon said GPE has approved nearly $98.85 million in financing for Bangladesh through a $48.85 million System Transformation Grant and a $50 million Multiplier Grant, and emphasised the need to ensure its proper utilisation.

The event was jointly organised by the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education, Unicef, Unesco and the Asian Development Bank (ADB).

The programme was chaired by Primary and Mass Education Secretary Md Sakhawat Hossain and attended by Primary and Mass Education State Minister Bobby Hajjaj, Prime Minister's Education Adviser Dr Mahdi Amin, Education Secretary Abdul Khalek, and representatives from the British High Commission, Unicef, Unesco, ADB and GPE.
