DR Congo goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi has become one of the breakout performers of the 2026 Fifa World Cup, drawing widespread attention with a series of crucial saves, including an impressive display against England in the Round of 32.
The 31-year-old's journey to the top has been anything but conventional. After years of developing in France and working his way through the lower divisions, he has established himself as both a Ligue 1 goalkeeper and DR Congo's undisputed no. 1.
Early life
Mpasi was born on 1 August 1994 in Meaux, France, to Congolese parents. He represented France at youth level before switching his international allegiance to DR Congo, where he has become one of the national team's most trusted players.
Club career
Mpasi began his football education at US Torcy before joining the youth academies of Paris Saint-Germain and Toulouse. Although he progressed through two of France's most prestigious academies, he did not make a senior appearance for either club.
After briefly being without a club, he joined Rodez in 2016 and became a key figure in the team's rise through French football. He helped the club win promotion to Ligue 2 before making more than 130 appearances across all competitions.
His consistent performances earned him a move to Ligue 1 side Le Havre in 2025, marking the first time in his career he would compete in France's top division.
International career
Mpasi made his senior debut for DR Congo in February 2022 in a friendly against Bahrain. He quickly established himself as the country's first-choice goalkeeper and played every match as the Leopards reached the semi-finals of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
One of the defining moments of his international career came during that tournament when he calmly converted the decisive penalty in a dramatic shootout victory over Egypt in the Round of 16.
Career highlights
Beyond his international success, Mpasi has produced memorable moments at club level as well. In October 2024, he scored the first goal of his professional career with a dramatic stoppage-time header for Rodez against Lorient; a rare feat for a goalkeeper.
Now representing Le Havre in Ligue 1, Mpasi has continued to develop into one of the most reliable goalkeepers in French football.
Why is he making headlines?
Mpasi's performances at the 2026 Fifa World Cup have elevated his profile well beyond France and Central Africa. His calm presence, sharp reflexes and ability to deliver in high-pressure moments have played a key role in DR Congo's historic World Cup campaign.
His display against England in the Round of 32, where he produced several outstanding saves to frustrate the Three Lions, has further strengthened his reputation as one of the tournament's standout goalkeepers.
