A woman and her five-year-old son were allegedly slaughtered by her husband following a domestic dispute at a Rohingya camp in Ukhiya, Cox's Bazar, while another son was critically injured in the attack.
The suspect has been on the run since the incident.
The killings took place at around 1:30am today (9 July) in Block B-6 of Camp No 6 in Ukhiya, said Shailen Chakma, additional commanding officer and superintendent of police of the 8 Armed Police Battalion (APBn).
The deceased were identified as Shahid Nur, 33, the wife of Eteshamul Haque, and their five-year-old son, Mohammad Shamim Haque.
Their nine-year-old son, Mohammad Absar, sustained serious injuries and is currently undergoing treatment at the hospital.
Quoting local residents, Shailen Chakma said, "The couple had been experiencing long-standing marital discord. In the early hours of today, an argument reportedly broke out again over the ongoing dispute. At one stage, the husband allegedly attacked his wife and their two sons with a sharp weapon before fleeing the scene as neighbours rushed in after hearing their screams."
Locals found the woman and one of her sons dead at the scene and rescued the injured child.
He was initially taken to a nearby camp hospital, then referred to Cox's Bazar District Sadar Hospital after his condition deteriorated, Shailen added.
An APBn police team visited the scene shortly after the incident and recovered the bodies of the woman and her son.
Shailen said, "Preliminary findings suggest the killings were the result of a domestic dispute. Our investigation is ongoing, and efforts are underway to arrest the suspect."
The bodies have been sent to the morgue of Cox's Bazar District Sadar Hospital for autopsy, she added.
