Eleven students of a government primary school in Bagerhat's Shyamnagar upazila fell ill after allegedly eating eggs provided under the government school feeding programme today (1 July).

The incident took place at East Dhansagar Government Primary School, where 55 students were served eggs as part of the programme. The affected students complained of severe stomach pain and were taken to the upazila health complex. They received treatment and had recovered by the evening.

Doctors initially suspected the illnesses were caused by consuming unhygienic eggs.

Speaking to The Business Standard, the school's assistant teacher Abdun Noor said, "The students fell sick shortly after eating the eggs. They were given first aid at the school before being rushed to the health complex."

Acting Upazila Nirbahi Officer Orthita Howlader said all the students returned home after receiving treatment.

"The upazila education officer has been instructed to submit an investigation report by tomorrow to determine the cause of the incident, after which necessary action will be taken," she added.

Upazila Education Officer Monir Ahmed said it has not yet been confirmed whether the eggs were responsible for the illnesses, and the investigation will determine the exact cause.

"If any irregularities or unhygienic conditions in the food supply are found, appropriate action will be taken," he said.

He informed that a company named Osaka Pabna supplies food under the school feeding programme in the upazila through a local distributor, Mukti.
