A Dhaka court today (7 July) placed two men on a two-day remand in connection with the crude bomb explosion at a rally of the National Citizen Party (NCP) in Savar that left several people, including two journalists, injured.
Dhaka Senior Judicial Magistrate Tajul Islam Sohag passed the order after a hearing, confirmed prosecution division's Court Sub-Inspector Md Bahaj Uddin.
The two accused are former Jubo League leader Md Nurul Islam, 52, and Jubo League activist Md Sajib, 32.
Earlier in the day, the investigation officer, Sub-Inspector Md Shakhawat Imtiaz of Savar Model Police Station, produced the two accused before the court and sought a seven-day remand.
According to the remand petition, the explosion occurred in front of the stage during an NCP rally at Tarapur Eidgah ground in Savar on the night of 6 July.
Investigators said they recovered fragments of a tin container believed to have been used in the improvised explosive device, along with red adhesive tape, wire and sand from the scene.
The petition further stated that the two accused had been seen behaving suspiciously around the venue before and during the rally.
Police argued that custodial interrogation was necessary to uncover the planning behind the attack, identify other suspects and recover additional explosives.
Defence lawyers opposed the remand petition and sought bail, arguing that the accused were arrested from their homes at around 3:30am while they were asleep.
They told the court that the two men had been falsely implicated to harass them, were not involved in politics and had no connection to the explosion. They also claimed local rivalries and provocation by a third party had led to their inclusion in the case.
The case was filed with Savar Model Police Station by Salamat Ullah Rony, member secretary of the NCP's Dhaka North district unit, naming unidentified individuals as accused.
