A two-year-old child died yesterday (10 July) after drowning in floodwaters in Satkania upazila of Chattogram.

The deceased, Ismail Hossain, was the son of local resident Zainal Abedin.

Speaking to The Business Standard, Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Khondkar Mahmudul Hasan said the child died after falling into floodwaters. 

The bereaved family will receive the necessary government assistance in accordance with the applicable regulations, he added.

According to locals, the child left the house unnoticed and fell into the floodwaters. When he could not be found, relatives began searching the surrounding area.

He was later recovered from the floodwaters and taken to Satkania Upazila Health Complex, where the doctor on duty declared him dead.

At least eight people died in Chattogram over the past few days as a result of persistent heavy rainfall, flooding and landslides.
