Artificial intelligence (AI)-powered traffic cameras are now operational at 19 major intersections across the capital, with around 1,500 traffic cases filed since the technology was introduced, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Mosleh Uddin Ahmed said today (30 June).
He made the remarks at an event held at the office of the deputy commissioner of DMP's Tejgaon Traffic Division, marking the launch of AI-based traffic monitoring and automated prosecution on Lake Road adjacent to the National Parliament and Zia Udyan.
The commissioner said 15 key intersections had already been brought under AI surveillance, leading to around 1,500 traffic cases so far. Four more intersections were added today, expanding the network to 19 across the capital.
He added that work is underway to expand the system to other important junctions across Dhaka.
Mosleh informed that the Lake Road connecting the July Memorial Museum crossing and Urojahaj crossing is a key route linking Mirpur, Mohammadpur and Dhanmondi with other parts of the city. Given its strategic importance, heavy pedestrian movement and frequent VVIP travel, the road has been brought under AI surveillance.
He said the road's wide layout often encourages speeding and unsafe lane changes, leading to frequent accidents. "The AI cameras have been installed to reduce such risks and improve compliance with traffic rules."
According to the DMP commissioner, around 1,500 traffic cases have been filed through the AI-based system so far. Fines are reflected in the system after payment is made to the traffic office.
Explaining the enforcement process, he said vehicle owners identified through the AI cameras receive prosecution notices not only via SMS but also by post to the registered address of the vehicle owner. The information is also published on the DMP Traffic Division's website.
Responding to a question about notices being sent to previous owners because vehicle ownership had not been transferred after sale, Mosleh said nearly 38,000 summons had been issued so far.
On battery-powered auto-rickshaws, the DMP commissioner said drives against the vehicles would continue, although removing all of them from Dhaka's roads immediately is not feasible.
He added that the Ministry of Home Affairs and the DMP have reached a policy decision on regulating battery-powered auto-rickshaws, which will be implemented gradually in coordination with relevant stakeholders.
