The High Court today (30 June) granted bail to former chief justice ABM Khairul Haque in a murder case filed over the death of a man during the July Uprising, with his lawyer saying the development clears the way for his release from jail.

The bench of Justice KM Zahid Sarwar Kajol and Justice Sheikh Abu Taher passed the order after hearing his bail petition. The court also issued a rule in the matter.

Senior lawyers Mansurul Haque Chowdhury, Motahar Hossain Saju and Sayeed Ahmed Raja appeared for the petitioner.

Following the hearing, Motahar Hossain Saju said Khairul Haque is facing a total of eight cases. However, as he has now secured bail in the present case, there is no legal bar to his release from prison, he added.

Earlier, on 21 June, a lower court rejected Khairul's bail petition in the case, prompting him to move the High Court.

According to the case statement, Khobaib, 20, was killed in Jatrabari on the morning of 5 August 2024 after police and activists of the Awami League allegedly opened fire during the July Uprising.

On 16 November 2024, the victim's brother, Zobayer Ahmed, filed the case with Jatrabari Police Station, accusing 80 people, including ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina.

Khairul was arrested from his residence on 24 July 2024 in connection with separate proceedings and has remained in jail in connection with multiple cases since then.
