Bangla Academy President and former chairman of the Bangla Department at the University of Dhaka, Professor Abul Kasem Fazlul Haq, passed away today (5 July). He was 85.
Raziya Rahman, daughter-in-law of the professor, confirmed the demise to The Business Standard.
"He died of cardiac arrest at his residence in the capital's Mirpur," she said.
Bangla Academy Director General Professor Mohammad Azam also confirmed the matter, saying Professor Fazlul Haq breathed his last between 2:30pm and 3:00pm.
Born on 30 September 1940 in Pakundia village of Kishoreganj's Pakundia upazila, Professor Fazlul Haq spent much of his academic career teaching at the University of Dhaka's Bangla Department.
He was widely recognised for his contributions to promoting the use of the Bangla language across all spheres of society.
In addition to editing the literary journals Sundaram and Lokayat, he authored more than 20 books, including Ekushey February Andolon, Rajniti Darshan, Sahitya Chinta and Sanskritir Shohoj Kotha.
He also edited several notable publications, including Itihasher Aloke Bangladesher Sanskriti and Swadeshchinta.
Professor Fazlul Haq received the Bangla Academy Literary Award in 1981 in recognition of his contributions to Bangla language and literature.
