The United States pulled one back through Julian Green, setting up a tense finish, but Belgium held on to progress.
The rivalry dates back to the inaugural Fifa World Cup in 1930, when the United States defeated Belgium 3-0 to register their first-ever World Cup win.
This upcoming clash will be the third World Cup meeting between the two nations.
Belgium holds the advantage in knockout encounters following its 2014 extra-time win, while the United States won the only previous group-stage meeting in 1930.
