The Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) today (1 August) provided free medical treatment and medicines to nearly 500 underprivileged people living in the border areas of Panchagarh as part of its humanitarian outreach programme.
Panchagarh Battalion (18 BGB) organised the medical camp at the Dhamurhat Adarsha Girls' High School ground under the Giragaon Border Outpost (BOP) in Dhamur Union of Atwari upazila.
Thakurgaon Sector Commander Colonel Mohammad Suruj Mia attended the programme as the chief guest, according to a BGB press release issued this afternoon.
The initiative was launched to ensure healthcare services for marginalised border residents, particularly during the monsoon season when seasonal diseases become more prevalent and access to medical care is often limited.
A team of experienced physicians provided free treatment to around 450 to 500 women, men and children, while necessary medicines were distributed free of charge according to patients' needs, the release said.
Speaking on the occasion, Colonel Suruj Mia said BGB, alongside safeguarding the country's independence, sovereignty and borders, has been carrying out its duties professionally to prevent cross-border crimes, including smuggling, drug trafficking, human trafficking and arms smuggling.
He said the force also remains committed to improving the living standards of border communities through humanitarian initiatives, including disaster response, relief distribution, free medical services and educational support.
The Civil Surgeon of Panchagarh, local public representatives, journalists, distinguished persons and BGB officials attended the programme, the release added.
