Cape Verde completed a remarkable group stage campaign by becoming the smallest country to qualify for the World Cup knockout stage after a goalless draw against Saudi Arabia on Friday (26 June).
Making their World Cup debut, the island nation from the west coast of Africa remained unbeaten throughout the group stage.
Cape Verde began their campaign with a 0-0 draw against 2010 world champions Spain before recovering from behind to secure a 2-2 draw against Uruguay. They wrapped up the group phase with another 0-0 result against Saudi Arabia.
The three draws earned Cape Verde three points, enough to finish second in the group behind Spain, who defeated Uruguay on Friday to top the standings.
Cape Verde will now face defending world champions Argentina in the Round of 32 in Miami on 3 July.
