A Chinese-developed portable device that uses artificial intelligence, sensors and a laser to detect and eliminate mosquitoes has entered mass production, with its developer expecting the first batch of units to ship in late August 2026.
Developed by Photon Matrix Lab, the device combines LiDAR, millimetre-wave radar, AI-powered vision and a precision laser to locate, track and target mosquitoes and other small flying insects, says CTGN.
Unlike some existing mosquito-detection products, the Photon Matrix device is designed to physically eliminate insects using its laser. The Israeli-made Bzigo Iris, for example, costs $299 and uses computer vision to locate mosquitoes before marking their position with a low-intensity laser.
Photon Matrix is offering consumers a choice of infrared and blue-laser versions through its newly opened online store.
Growing market for automated mosquito control
The launch comes as China's mosquito-control industry expands and companies increasingly develop automated alternatives to conventional chemical repellents and traps.
China's mosquito-control market is projected to grow from 7.86 billion yuan ($1.1 billion) in 2025 to 12.43 billion yuan by 2030, according to the figures provided.
The shift towards automation has included experiments with mosquito-attracting robots. During the 2023 Hangzhou Asian Games, smart robots designed to mimic human body temperature and breathing, while using carbon dioxide or ultraviolet light, were deployed to attract and trap mosquitoes.
Such developments reflect efforts to use sensors, automation and artificial intelligence in pest control, although conventional chemical products and traps remain widely used.
Questions remain over performance and safety
Photon Matrix's advertised performance metrics have not yet been fully verified through independent testing. The developer has said it plans to release additional testing results and safety information.
The technology also faces questions over whether it can move beyond a niche market. Consumer adoption is likely to depend on the device's safety, effectiveness and reliability, as well as its price.
For now, high-tech mosquito-control products are generally viewed as technology-based options rather than direct replacements for established chemical repellents and traps.
