All shops at Dhaka's New Market remained closed today (12 July) after heavy overnight rainfall caused severe waterlogging in the area, while electricity to the market was disconnected as a safety measure.
New Market Traders' Association Office Secretary Firoz Ul Islam confirmed the development, saying no shops opened for business and there were no customers in the market due to the flooding.
"Continuous rainfall since last night had inundated the market area, prompting traders to suspend business operations. The Dhaka Power Distribution Company also disconnected the electricity supply to the market to prevent any electrical accidents," he added.
Firoz further said a decision on reopening the market would be taken tomorrow after reviewing the situation.
The closure came as heavy rainfall disrupted normal life across Dhaka on the first working day of the week, inundating roads, triggering widespread waterlogging and causing severe traffic congestion.
According to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department, 76mm of rainfall was recorded between midnight and 6am on Sunday, the highest six-hour rainfall recorded in the capital so far this month. Total rainfall over the 24 hours until 6am reached 98mm.
The weather office said the rainfall was caused by an active monsoon and warned that showers are likely to continue over the next few days.
