State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam today (11 July) said diplomatic efforts are underway to bring back fugitives from different countries so they can face justice in Bangladesh.

Speaking as the chief guest at a seminar titled Women's Advancement, Education and Career at the Munshiganj Sadar upazila auditorium, she said the government is continuing the process of repatriating individuals who fled the country and ensuring their trials and sentences are carried out in Bangladesh.

"Sheikh Hasina's trial has concluded and she has been sentenced. Several other authoritarian figures have also been convicted," she said.

"The process of bringing back those who have fled abroad so they can stand trial and serve their sentences in Bangladesh began during the interim government's tenure. The current government has continued those diplomatic efforts since assuming office," she added.

Highlighting the government's priorities, the state minister said education has received the highest allocation in the national budget since independence.

She also said the budget places special emphasis on women's education, adding that undergraduate education for women has been made free and the necessary budgetary allocation has been ensured.

The seminar was chaired by Munshiganj Deputy Commissioner (DC) Syeda Nurmahal Ashrafi.
