Police have sought to show former chief justice ABM Khairul Haque arrested in a fresh case filed under the Explosives Act and on charges of attempted murder.
The application was submitted today (2 July) by the case's investigating officer, Sub-Inspector Saiful Islam of Banani Police Station.
Following the application, the court of Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Md Sefatullah fixed 6 July for a hearing on the matter in the presence of the accused, prosecution Sub-Inspector Moktar Hossain confirmed the development.
According to the case statement, demonstrators were protesting in front of Setu Bhaban in Dhaka's Mohakhali on the afternoon of 4 August 2024 during the July Uprising. As they marched towards Shahbagh, they allegedly came under attack and were targeted with gunfire, crude bombs and hand grenades, leaving Ujjal Mia and 25 to 30 others injured.
Following the incident, Ujjal Mia filed a case with Banani Police Station on charges of attempted murder and offences under the Explosives Act.
Earlier in the day, the Supreme Court's chamber judge upheld the High Court's order granting bail to Khairul in a murder case filed over the death of a protester during the July Uprising, clearing the way for his release from jail.
On 24 July 2025, the Detective Branch of police arrested Khairul from his residence in the capital's Dhanmondi area.
He was subsequently shown arrested in eight cases one after another.
Although his lawyers have on several occasions said he would be released after securing bail from the High Court, he has remained in custody as police continue to seek to show him arrested in new cases.
