A Dhaka court has ordered that former Naogaon-6 MP Md Omar Faruk Sumon be shown arrested in an attempted murder case filed over the shooting of a man during the July uprising.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Jamsed Alam today (8 July) passed the order after hearing a petition, state prosecutor Shamsuddoha Sumon confirmed.
Earlier, on Monday (6 July), the investigating officer, Mohammadpur Police Station Sub-Inspector Md Moniruzzaman, sought to show Omar Faruk arrested in the case. The court then fixed today's date for the hearing in the presence of the accused.
According to the prosecution's application, the plaintiff and victim, Md Sohel Rana, 38, took part in uprising protests in front of Mojur Villa near Mohammadpur Police Station on 5 August 2024.
The application alleges that Sohel was shot and injured during an attack on protesters, while bombs thrown at students and the public left many others seriously injured.
The attempted murder case was filed at Mohammadpur Police Station on 11 June 2025 against 222 people, including former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and her son Sajeeb Wazed Joy.
Among the prominent accused are former ministers Obaidul Quader, Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, Anisul Huq, Salman F Rahman, Hasanul Haq Inu, Rashed Khan Menon and Dr Dipu Moni, as well as singer Momtaz Begum, actress Shomi Kaiser, and former DB chief Harun Or Rashid.
The Detective Branch arrested Sumon during an operation in the capital on 8 September 2025. He has remained in custody since then.
