A tribunal in Dhaka has sentenced Md Jahangir Alam to life imprisonment for killing his wife, Shahanur Akter, over a dowry demand in Keraniganj eight years ago.
Judge Munshi Md Moshiyar Rahman of Dhaka Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-4 handed down the verdict this morning (9 July).
The tribunal also fined Jahangir Tk50,000, in default of which he will have to serve another year in prison without hard labour.
Jahangir, who was brought before the court from prison for the verdict, was sent back to jail with a conviction warrant after the sentence was announced.
Public Prosecutor Md Ershad Alam George confirmed the information.
According to the case statement, Shahanur married Jahangir around 12 years ago after the death of her first husband, Md Harun.
The couple lived in a rented house in the Khalpar area under Keraniganj Model Police Station and worked as day labourers as well as collecting household waste.
Jahangir was addicted to drugs and often demanded dowry from Shahanur, leading to frequent quarrels between the couple, according to the case documents.
On 20 November 2018, Shahanur's daughter woke up and went to call her mother for breakfast, but found the door to the room locked from the outside.
She then called her brother, Md Hridoy. After opening the door and entering the room, they found Shahanur's bloodied body with her throat slit lying on a bed and covered with a quilt.
Jahangir was not present in the house at the time.
Following the incident, the victim's brother, Jamal Uddin, filed a case with Keraniganj Model Police Station.
After completing the investigation, Keraniganj police Sub-Inspector Md Rafiqul Islam submitted a charge sheet against Jahangir on 14 June 2019.
According to the charge sheet, Jahangir quarrelled with Shahanur after she failed to provide the demanded dowry money and slit her throat with a sharp weapon in the bedroom of their rented house sometime between 10pm on 19 November and the morning of 20 November 2018.
He then covered the body with a quilt and fled the scene.
The tribunal later framed charges against Jahangir and began the trial. Six witnesses testified during the proceedings.
