National Citizen Party (NCP) Convener and Opposition Chief Whip Md Nahid Islam today (11 July) alleged that flood victims in Chattogram and Cox's Bazar were being deprived of adequate assistance due to negligence by the local administration.

Speaking at a divisional rally organised by the 11-party alliance at Rangpur Zilla School ground, Nahid said people affected by the ongoing floods were not receiving sufficient support because of administrative failures.

"We pray for the flood victims in Cox's Bazar and Chattogram. However, we are seeing that due to the negligence of the local administration, those affected by the floods are not getting adequate assistance," he said.

The rally was organised to demand implementation of the referendum verdict, speedy execution of the Teesta Master Plan, an end to cross-border push-ins, and measures to ease people's daily hardships. Organisers claimed a large number of people attended despite heavy rain.

Nahid criticised the BNP-backed mayor of Chattogram, alleging that he had failed to take effective measures to address the city's chronic waterlogging.

He further criticised the government over alleged push-ins at the border, saying it had failed to stop such incidents as well as border killings.

"If the government cannot stop push-ins at the border or prevent border killings, it should remove the word 'nationalist' from its party's name," he said.

Highlighting what he described as long-standing development disparities in Rangpur division, Nahid said expectations that the first post-uprising budget would prioritise the region had not been met.

He alleged that the latest budget reduced allocations for Rangpur, included no major development projects for the region, and excluded Rangpur City Corporation from development funding.

Nahid also accused the government of reducing allocations for opposition-held constituencies, saying public rights should not be curtailed because opposition lawmakers criticise the government.

Calling for special allocations for Rangpur, he urged the government to implement the Teesta Master Plan without delay.

The NCP leader also accused the BNP of betraying the public over the referendum, its 31-point reform proposal, the July Charter and democracy, adding that his party would continue its campaign in parliament and on the streets to implement the referendum's verdict.

The rally was attended by leaders of the 11-party alliance, including LDP Chairman Colonel (retd) Oli Ahmed and NCP Member Secretary Akhter Hossen.
