Morocco moved a step closer to the Fifa World Cup quarter-finals after Azzedine Ounahi's second-half strike gave the Atlas Lions a 1-0 lead over co-hosts Canada in their Round of 16 clash at Houston Stadium.

The match was still in progress at the time of writing. Ounahi broke the deadlock in the 50th minute, finishing off a well-worked free-kick routine orchestrated by Achraf Hakimi.

Canada had enjoyed the better chances before the break, with Jonathan David and Tani Oluwaseyi testing Morocco goalkeeper Yassine Bounou, who produced several key saves to keep the scores level.

Morocco improved after halftime and found the breakthrough through Ounahi's low finish into the bottom corner.

The co-hosts responded by increasing the pressure and making attacking substitutions in search of an equaliser, while Morocco defended resolutely as the contest entered its closing stages.

The knockout tie also became increasingly physical, with several players shown yellow cards as tensions rose.
