Spain went into the break with a 1-0 lead over Austria in their Fifa World Cup round of 32 clash early Friday (3 July) after Mikel Oyarzabal's strike put the La Roja on course for a place in the last 16.

Luis de la Fuente's side controlled possession for much of the opening 45 minutes and broke the deadlock in the 36th minute when Oyarzabal found the net following sustained Spanish pressure.

Spain thought they had opened the scoring earlier through Marc Cucurella, but the effort was ruled out.

Teenage winger Lamine Yamal was a constant threat down the right flank, while Austria goalkeeper Alexander Schlager produced several fine saves to keep his side in the contest.

Austria had their moments in attack, with Michael Gregoritsch and Marcel Sabitzer threatening Spain's defence, but they were unable to find an equaliser before halftime.

The winner of the contest will advance to the last 16, where they will face either Portugal or Croatia.
