Prime Minister Tarique Rahman deposits 10% of his monthly salary into the government exchequer, Health Minister Sardar Md Sakhawat Hossain has said.
The prime minister has also urged cabinet members to contribute 10% of their salaries to the government exchequer according to their ability, he added.
The health minister made the remarks while addressing an event organised by the Bangladesh Midwifery Society at a hotel in the capital this morning (6 July).
Referring to a meeting held yesterday (5 July), the minister said the prime minister had made the request to the ministers with great humility.
The minister quoted the prime minister as saying, "Honourable ministers, I want to say something today. I am making the request humbly. You may accept what I say, or you may not,"
The prime minister further said, "My father, former president Ziaur Rahman, used to return 10% of his monthly salary to the government exchequer to assist poor and destitute people or meet any government need."
"I am receiving a salary because I cannot manage without it. My basic salary is Tk1.15 lakh. I deposit Tk11,500, or 10%, from my salary every month," he added.
"When the salary reaches my account, I withdraw the amount and issue a cheque to the government account," the prime minister said.
The health minister said all cabinet members were pleased that the prime minister had approached them with the request.
