A court in Barishal today (2 July) sentenced a man to death in a case filed over the rape of a madrasa-going girl in Barishal's Uzirpur.
Judge Md Ashraf Uddin of the Tribunal for the Prevention of Violence Against Children at the Barishal District and Sessions Judge's Court delivered the verdict.
The convict, Md Alamgir Sikdar, 55, is the son of Abdur Rashid Sikdar of Purba Keshabkati village in Uzirpur Upazila.
The convict was present in the courtroom when the sentence was pronounced, the court's nazir, Md Kamrul Islam, confirmed.
According to court records, the convict and the complainant are maternal cousins who reside in the same homestead within the same locality. The victim is the complainant's ninth-grade daughter and a student at a madrasa.
Due to professional obligations, the complainant was frequently away from home. Taking advantage of these absences, the accused intimidated and repeatedly violated the victim, which eventually resulted in her becoming four months pregnant.
The final incident occurred on 22 March 2023, when the accused forcibly took the victim to a garden behind their house and assaulted her again.
Upon the victim disclosing the incident to her mother, her father filed a rape case at Uzirpur Model Police Station.
Following the filing of the case, Uzirpur police apprehended the accused and produced him before the court.
After a comprehensive trial involving extensive witness testimonies and judicial hearings, the court sentenced the accused to death today.
